Editor's Letter May 2009

ArtVoices has hit its stride—the last issue marks the beginning of a new era in Contemporary art journalism. Our writers have their finger on the pulse of emerging art and artists. ArtVoices has added a few sections to remain committed to all the Arts. We have a new Fashion Editor, my ex-wife’s sister, Designer Melanie Dizon. This month she was in London talking with fellow Fashion Designer Andrew Buckler. We also added a Book and Theatre review section that will open dialogue with writers, directors and actors.

I want all artists who are reading this to know you have a voice at ArtVoices. We are all about real Artists and their process. I don’t care what school you went to, I don’t care who you’re related to or who you know or who you’re married to. All I care about is the work! You can leave your ego and pretentions at the door.

My job is to get your work where the Museums Directors, Collectors, Curators and Gallerist can see it and start the protocol it takes to get your foot in the door, or better yet, kick the door down. We have one agenda: keep this thing of ours going for decades without becoming jaded, self-serving or more importantly, losing touch with our demographic.

My good friend and respected Artist Jeffrey Cook passed just recently. When I first heard the news I began to weep. I loved and respected this man. I would run into Jeff from time to time in New Orleans at various bus stops. We would talk about each other’s work and what was going on in our lives professionally and personally. Jeffrey was a special man. He didn’t make himself available to many but when he let you in you knew you were in the company of a tremendous man with vision, individuality and uniqueness. The world has lost a great artist and I have lost a friend. In New Orleans we celebrate life and we celebrate death as one in the same. Someone said they saw Jeffrey today at the New Orleans Museum of Art, someone else said they saw him at Stella Jones. He was also seen at Ashe and Barristers, Xavier too, they said he was with Doug Reid and John Scott and they was just kickin’ it.

Best Regards,

Terrence Sanders, Editor & Publisher
