Editor's Letter February 2010
ArtVoices magazine is an art periodical that continues to focus mainly on emerging artists and contemporary art movements nationwide. Our collective consists of artists, architects, poets, graphic designers and illustrators that contribute on a daily basis from all over the country. We are the social and political documentarians of our era. We are not self-serving or elitist––we just want to offer an alternative outlet to inform and educate. We are not afraid to print the whole truth in this incestuous and turbulent climate. We don’t need to imitate, because we set the precedent. We don’t need a head count to prove we’re relevant or worthy, because everything we’re involved in is cutting edge and important. ArtVoices’ finger is on the pulse, but the elitists are too afraid to look, not to mention touch. They walk around with their eyes closed and are afraid to comment because they are out of touch. I want you to mark my words carefully––New Orleans Contemporary Art: Post-Katrina will signifya major shift from the so-called major contemporary art destinations in retrospect. We don’t need a salary, or an office, or a staff of yes men and women to do what we do. To be honest, if we couldn’t create we would cease and desist. We would perish. There would be no reason to live without the work. We are the underground, the avant-garde, and the voice of our generation. ArtVoices is a tool with which we will fix the machine because it is broken. So artists, please watch them with your third eye. Please listen carefully to their rhetoric and read between the lines, because you are a force and you have a voice.
This 23rd issue marks the 2nd anniversary of ArtVoices, and my unconditional support of emerging artists everywhere. I am an artist but more importantly I am a member of my community. You are the masterpiece of your life and the sooner you believe this truism the better. Thank you all for your continued support.
Best Regards,
Terrence Sanders
