When it comes to being eco-chic, non-profit Global Green has a definite corner on the market. Under the guidance of Matt Petersen, this organization has promoted sustainability since before it was popular. Founded in 1993 by philanthropist Diane Simon, Global Green is the national arm of Green Cross International. Since its inception, Global Green has worked closely with A-list actors and activists to effect social change by utilizing the media. Its board boasts star presence from such heavy hitters as Leonardo DiCaprio, Ed Norton, and Selma Hayek. This star power has given Global Green access to influential people and afforded them the opportunity to boost the appeal of eco-living. Through the years Global Green’s work has crossed many overlapping sectors, showing how interrelated sustainability can be. From fashion to transportation to building and construction, Global Green’s work addresses it all. Looking through the lens of visionary Matt Petersen, one can see how the eco-living is more of a way of life than a passing trend.

Global Green uses high profile events to boost awareness of environmental issues. The organization’s yearly Green Oscar Party draws hundreds every year. Life imitates art, and one project that proved this to be true was a large scale solar installation on an affordable housing project done in California in collaboration with actor Ed Norton. This project and its financing structure is now a model for applying solar to the affordable housing market. Celebrites simply took the project to another level.

After the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, Global Green was one of the first responders on the ground with a plan. Teaming with actor Brad Pitt, the group began an affordable housing project in the storm-ravaged Lower 9th Ward. Their work set an example for long-term sustainability and a pace for rebuilding. The organization was also instrumental in the rebuilding of New Orleans’ schools and other housing. Recently, the team also got involved in the city’s biennial Prospect.1 by sponsoring a mobile art studio, constructed by artist Paul Valinsky using a converted FEMA trailer. “The intention behind the art is the most important part of it,” says Matt Petersen. “Art should always be used to inform, to educate.” The project is currently being displayed in an art show in Marfaa, Texas. Global Green continues to underscore the importance of the conservation and
